Playing poker in Osaka as a visitor
You can play Texas Hold'em in Osaka at amusement poker venues: poker rooms and bars where you pay to take part and play with chips that are never exchanged for cash or prizes. They are not casinos, and you cannot win money. This guide covers what visitors from abroad usually need to know before going: how the system works, ID and apps, language, fees and the first visit.
Checked: . Venue details below come from each venue's official pages via our venue profiles.
1. How amusement poker works
Japanese law punishes gambling — staking money or other property on a result — and venues that let customers play on card tables need an amusement business licence that bans prizes for game results. Amusement poker venues therefore separate what you pay from how you play:
- You pay an entry or seat fee, and often buy play chips or join a session or tournament for a fee.
- Chips and points stay inside the venue. They are not exchanged for cash or prizes, and winning does not return your fee.
- Anyone offering to buy back chips, settle up in cash or move you to a real-money online site is outside this system. Walk away.

2. ID, membership and apps
Requirements differ by venue. Some require their own smartphone app or a membership with identity verification; others say no booking is needed. Age rules also differ: some venues admit children with time limits, others are 20 and over. Most foreign visitors are required to carry their passport at all times under Japan's Immigration Control Act (Article 23), so bring it. Whether a venue accepts a passport for its own checks is up to the venue; where a profile below does not name the accepted documents, ask before you go.

3. English support
English support is decided by each venue and can depend on who is working that day. When we checked on 29 October 2026, none of the official pages for the six venues then listed stated that lessons or table support are available in English. That does not mean staff cannot help — it means we could not confirm it. Ask the venue directly before you go, and say which language you need for the lesson and at the table.
Poker vocabulary is largely shared: fold, check, call, raise and all-in are used at Japanese tables too, usually pronounced in Japanese (フォールド fōrudo, コール kōru). Make your action clear with a word or gesture and wait for your turn. Review table etiquette and the glossary before your visit.
4. Reading the fees
A visit usually combines several separate charges. Add them up before you agree to anything extra and decide your own spending limit for the day. Each venue profile lists the official fees with a check date.
| Japanese | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 入場料 | nyūjōryō | Entry fee. Sometimes includes one or more drinks. |
| 席料 / 施設利用料 | sekiryō / shisetsu riyōryō | Seat or facility fee. |
| チップ購入 | chippu kōnyū | Buying play chips. Venue units shown as $, M$ or similar are play units, not US dollars or a cash balance. |
| 講習 / ビギナー | kōshū / biginā | Lesson / beginner session. Free instruction does not always mean the game itself is free. |
| ドリンク / 飲み放題 | dorinku / nomihōdai | Drink / all-you-can-drink plan. Some venues require a drink plan. |
| 税込 | zeikomi | Tax included. 税抜 (zeinuki) means tax is added on top. |
| 予約 / 会員登録 | yoyaku / kaiin tōroku | Reservation / membership registration. |
| 身分証 / 本人確認 | mibunshō / honnin kakunin | Identification / identity check. |
Prices on a venue's site can change, and dated examples are not a guarantee for your visit. Check the official page for your date and ask if a required cost is unclear.
5. Your first visit, step by step
Step 1
Pick a venue and a date
Compare venues by area, fees and beginner support, then open the venue's official site or social account for your date. Some venues post weekly opening days or session times rather than fixed hours.
Step 2
Check booking, app and age rules
Find out whether you need a reservation, the venue's app or a membership, and which ID documents are accepted. If you cannot find the answer, contact the venue through the official channel linked from its profile.
Step 3
Bring your passport and phone
Carry the ID you confirmed and, if the venue uses an app, a charged phone with the app installed and signed in before you arrive.
Step 4
Tell reception it is your first visit
Say that you are new and ask what the total required cost is, whether a beginner session is running and when you can leave. A short Japanese phrase helps: “Hajimete desu” (初めてです) — “It's my first time.”
Step 5
Play, then leave the chips behind
Chips and points are for play inside the venue. You pay to take part; you do not take chips home or exchange them for cash or prizes.
For a longer checklist and a reception script, read your first amusement poker visit. To keep arrival, departure and return-journey times in one memo, use the plan for the day. For areas and hotels, see planning an Osaka stay.
6. Practise before you travel
You do not need to be a strong player for a beginner session, but knowing the order of play makes the first table much easier.
- Texas Hold'em rules in 10 minutes
- Hand ranking quiz
- Free practice table — heads-up against the computer, with no money and no account.
